Under President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico is reviving its security collaboration with the United States, following a period of strained relations during the tenure of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Omar García Harfuch, the Security Cabinet coordinator, has become a pivotal figure in this renewed partnership, engaging in multiple discussions with senior U.S. officials. These meetings have primarily focused on enhancing intelligence sharing and combating organized crime. Mexican authorities claim that the accelerated exchange of information has enabled quicker responses to criminal activities.
Since Sheinbaum took office, Mexico has reported significant achievements, including tens of thousands of arrests, substantial seizures of weapons and drugs, and the dismantling of thousands of illicit drug laboratories. The government has also expedited the extradition of high-profile criminal suspects to the United States, with officials noting a noticeable decline in fentanyl trafficking as a result.
This renewed collaboration marks a departure from the policies of the López Obrador administration, which had previously shuttered a U.S. intelligence unit operating in Mexico and imposed stricter regulations on foreign security agents. The bilateral relationship further deteriorated after the 2020 arrest of former Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos and contentious debates over organized crime investigations. In 2024, tensions escalated when reports suggested that drug-trafficking funds might have been linked to López Obrador’s 2006 presidential campaign, although these allegations did not culminate in formal charges, they nonetheless eroded trust between the Mexican government and U.S. authorities.
Despite the progress in cooperation, President Sheinbaum continues to emphasize the importance of Mexico’s sovereignty and insists on mutual respect in its dealings with the U.S. Her administration has also voiced criticism against perceived efforts by U.S. officials to influence or sow discord within Mexico’s security leadership. Consequently, while both nations aim for closer coordination in tackling organized crime, Mexico remains firm that any intelligence collaboration must be conducted in a manner that respects its sovereignty and national interests.
