Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a stark warning against US President Donald Trump’s decision to pause new sanctions on Russia, cautioning that such a move could embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin to escalate the war in Ukraine. Zelenskyy emphasized that maintaining economic pressure on Russia is crucial for international efforts to end the conflict and urged the US and European countries to strengthen their diplomatic strategies.
The proposed sanctions, now on hold, targeted Russia’s energy sector, financial institutions, and oil transportation networks. They also included potential tariffs of up to 100% on countries importing Russian oil, notably China and India. The 60-day pause aims to allow the US administration to evaluate the potential economic impact of these measures.
As the conflict continues, Russia has intensified attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, raising concerns about electricity shortages as winter approaches. Zelenskyy has called for increased international aid to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and safeguard civilians.
Additionally, Zelenskyy expressed concerns over restrictions impacting Starlink satellite internet services, which Ukrainian forces rely on. He warned that disruptions could hinder certain military operations, underscoring the operational challenges faced by Ukraine’s military.
This disagreement highlights ongoing differences between Washington and Kyiv concerning sanctions, military assistance, and strategies to end the war. Zelenskyy maintains that consistent economic and military pressure on Russia is vital to achieving a lasting peace.
