Euro Hits 17-Month Low as France’s Rising Debt Stirs Investor Concerns

Date:

The euro reached a 17-month low against the US dollar on Monday, reflecting heightened investor anxiety over France’s escalating debt and the broader political uncertainty within the eurozone. The currency fell approximately 0.8%, dropping below $1.12, a level not seen since May 2025. This recent decline contributes to the euro’s overall depreciation of about 1.2% this month, following a significant drop from its January peak of $1.20.

Investor concerns are increasingly centered on France’s mounting borrowing costs and the government’s strategies to curb its budget deficit. French 10-year government bond yields have surged to their highest since 2002, and the yield spread between French and German bonds has expanded to its widest point since 2012. In response, France’s minority government has outlined a €54 billion savings initiative, aiming to reduce the deficit from 5.5% of GDP this year to 5% next year. However, this plan faces significant political resistance, casting doubt on the government’s ability to effectively manage public finances.

The situation is further complicated by Spain’s decision to call an early general election, adding another layer of uncertainty. Analysts caution that political instability in both France and Spain, combined with ongoing concerns about sovereign debt, could exert additional pressure on the euro and elevate risks for the entire currency bloc.

These developments underscore the challenges the eurozone faces in maintaining economic stability amidst growing political and fiscal pressures. As the situation evolves, investor sentiment and market reactions will likely continue to influence the euro’s trajectory.
