Saudi Arabia Acquires Advanced F-35 Jets in $24.3 Billion Tech Deal

Date:

The potential sale of 48 F-35 stealth fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, valued at $24.3 billion, could significantly enhance the kingdom’s air defense capabilities and strengthen its deterrence against regional threats. This development marks a deepening military collaboration between the United States and Saudi Arabia, although it still requires the green light from Congress.

According to the US State Department, this transaction is designed to bolster Saudi Arabia’s defense infrastructure while ensuring it operates seamlessly with US military forces. The department emphasized that this deal aligns with the longstanding US policy of preserving Israel’s qualitative military edge in the Middle East.

For years, Saudi Arabia has expressed interest in acquiring the advanced F-35 fighter jets, which are currently operated by Israel as the sole Middle Eastern country with access to this technology. The prospect of Saudi Arabia joining the ranks of F-35 operators has previously raised concerns in Israel, given the sensitive nature of military balance in the region.

This proposed agreement is part of a broader trend of US arms sales to Saudi Arabia, including contracts involving bombs, tank engines, and precision rocket systems. Such deals underscore Riyadh’s ongoing efforts to modernize its military forces amid a complex regional security environment.

Nevertheless, the F-35 sale is likely to face scrutiny in the US Congress. Lawmakers may voice concerns about safeguarding sensitive US military technology, especially as Saudi Arabia expands its ties with countries like China. The Congressional review process will serve as a critical juncture for determining the future of this high-profile arms deal.
