Cutting-Edge 1.15 MW Battery System to Boost Michigan Land Conservation

Date:

The advancement of energy resilience and efficient renewable power usage in Traverse City, Michigan, is set to make significant strides with the installation of a cutting-edge battery energy storage system. This development comes after the U.S. Department of Energy granted final funding approval for the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) project, which will integrate a 1.15 MW battery storage system with the existing 185 kW solar photovoltaic array at GTRLC’s headquarters.

Facilitated by Advanced Battery Concepts (ABC), a Michigan-based energy storage technology firm, the project aims to harness solar energy more effectively by using it when required, rather than at the point of generation. This initiative is expected to bolster energy security and optimize the use of renewable resources in the region.

The financial backing for this project comes through Congressionally Directed Spending, which is managed by the Department of Energy. The project will feature ABC’s innovative GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology. This technology is notable for its reduced lead content compared to conventional batteries, while still maintaining the safety and recyclability benefits of lead-based chemistry. The batteries will be installed in three commercial-grade BOX-BE™ enclosures.

Manufactured in Michigan, these batteries underscore the state’s pivotal role in the domestic energy storage supply chain. With the funding secured, the project has now moved into the procurement and manufacturing phase, with plans for installation and commissioning slated for the second quarter of 2027.
