Sunset Center Launches Centennial with Tech-Enhanced Free Community Event

Date:

On October 25, 2026, Carmel-by-the-Sea’s iconic Sunset Center will kick off a five-year celebration commemorating its historic roots and cultural impact. The event, which marks 100 years since the opening of the original Sunset School building, will be the inaugural occasion of the “Century of Creativity | 1926–2031” initiative. This extensive campaign is set to culminate in 2031 with the centennial celebration of its renowned theater auditorium.

Running from 1 to 4 p.m., the anniversary event will be a bustling affair filled with live performances, visual art displays, historical exhibits, and family-friendly activities. Notably, the historic 718-seat theater and outdoor terrace will host performances by esteemed groups such as the Carmel Bach Festival, Monterey Symphony, Carmel Music Society, Chamber Music Monterey Bay, Youth Music Monterey, Carmel High School Chamber Singers, and Monterey Peninsula Ballet Theatre/TDC, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

One of the highlights will be the Sunset Legacy Wall, a participatory art project where attendees can leave artwork, memories, and messages reflecting the community’s connection to Sunset Center. Additionally, families will find enjoyment in activities like rock painting, while the entire campus will offer live art, music, photography programs, oral history collections, wellness activities, and guided tours showcasing the property’s transformation from a school to a cultural hub. An archival exhibition will further illustrate the center’s evolution.

Local organizations, including the Carmel Heritage Society, Harrison Memorial Library, The Carmel Foundation, Carmel Youth Center, Carmel Residents Association, and Carmel Woman’s Club, will be integral contributors to the day’s events. Attendees will also be treated to complimentary refreshments, with Sunset Center concessions providing additional food and beverage options for purchase.

This momentous occasion and the ensuing five-year celebration aim to underscore Sunset Center’s historical significance and ongoing relationship with the Monterey Peninsula community. The event is free and open to the public, taking place at the Sunset Center located on San Carlos Street at Ninth Avenue, Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.
